Ringway sponsors CIHT Innovative Women in Transport and Engineering exhibition

A new exhibition that aims to encourage future generations of women to consider careers in transport and engineering is being sponsored by Ringway, with an employee from its joint venture company, Ringway Jacobs, leading the way.

The Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation unveiled its Innovative Women in Transport and Engineering exhibition on 15 March at Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum.

The exhibition is designed to encourage primary school pupils to consider future roles within the industry by showcasing the contribution of women currently working in transport and engineering across the West Midlands Region – including Katie Robinson from Ringway Jacobs.

Katie, Communications Manager for Ringway Jacobs’ Cheshire East Highways Contract, is one of nine people paving the way for women in the industry, whose stories feature in the exhibition.

Coming from a family that all work in transport, including her dad, brother and husband, regarding her role in the highways industry, Katie said: “Our industry has taken great steps forward in improving diversity in recent years and I am delighted to be involved in the promotion of careers for women within highways and transportation.

“I hope that young people visiting the exhibition are able to see the breadth of opportunities that are available for everyone, including those from diverse backgrounds, with different skills, and how enjoyable and inspiring this career path can be.”

Mike Notman, Managing Director of Ringway, said: “I am delighted that Ringway is actively supporting an event that is encouraging youngsters to consider careers in transport and engineering from an early age.

“There are inspiring women in many vital roles across our business responsible for everything from engineering major projects to communicating our work to the public and across the sector.

“Hopefully some of the young people visiting the Innovative Women in Transport and Engineering exhibition will be inspired to become part of the Ringway family in the future.”

Sue Percy, CIHT Chief Executive, said: “CIHT has a vision of world-class transportation infrastructure and services, and to achieve this we believe that we must be representative of the people and communities which we serve.

“We believe that diversity and inclusion has real benefits when we look at how we can tackle the skills shortages our industry clearly faces.

“Skill shortages and needs have been well documented in the last couple of years, but our sector is still coming to terms with what this actually means and what steps can be taken to address it.

“I am delighted that we have chosen to focus this exhibition on Innovative Women in Transport and Engineering in the West Midlands as this is one area where we can all be proactive in effecting positive change.”

‘Innovative Women in Transport and Engineering’ will run until 30 September at Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum, Millennium Point, Curzon Street, Birmingham, B4 7XG.
