Binfield Learning Village – Design and Build Works

Ringway has recently completed its first design and build scheme in Bracknell. The section 278 works were required to support the opening of a new learning village. The aim of the project was to realign and widen a junction, widen carriageway and footpath, construct a 15-space car park, footpath and two controlled pedestrian crossings.

With a design completed by colleagues in Ringway Hertfordshire, the team in Bracknell worked to target cost to programme and complete the works before the opening of the new school. Instructed through under NEC Option C, works undertaken included:

  • 1100m of widened      carriageway and new kerbs
  • 1100m of re      edged and resurfaced footpath
  • 1600 tonnes of      carriageway surfacing completed
  • 1680 m2 of      footpath constructed and finished with a decorative resin surface
  • 33 New street      lights installed, as well as new cabling and joints
  • 220m of new      drainage constructed

Despite a delayed start, the ‘beast from the east’ and a heat wave, the site was ready for the pupils on the first day of school.

Alex Keeley, Graduate Engineer and site agent for the project said: “I was responsible for this scheme from planning through to the final account. As my first site since graduating it has provided a lot of opportunities to solve problems and deal with clients, other contractors and members of the public.”

Chris Edwards, Divisional Manager said: “I am proud of this scheme, undertaking it represents a new way of thinking in Bracknell. It isn’t a traditional TMC project and came with a lot of challenges. The considered approach of Stewart and the team resulted in the successful delivery of this scheme, running to both time and budget. We will now build on what we have learnt and continue to support our client by offering ‘TMC +’ services.”
